Raised in a batch of seedlings at Gravetye Manor, Sussex and introduced and named by Rowland Jackman after Ernest Markham's death in 1937. A classical clematis, with magenta 10-12cm (4-5in) wide roundish flowers. The broad tepals are overlapping, tapering to a point with crimpled margins. The anthers are greenish cream. A very colourful flower. It flowers best when grown in full sun where the stems can be ripened. RHS Award of Garden Merit
