Raised by Morel, France, in 1885. A vigorous very free flowering plant, producing more flowers than cl. viticella 'Blue Belle' but not so large. The 7-8cm (3in) flowers have four to six tepals which can be slightly gappy, the violet-purple tepals have a reddish tint when young, recurving edges to the tepals and contrasting yellow anthers. Needs a light background to show the flowers off to the best advantage. RHS Award of Garden Merit
