Guernsey Clematis Nursery

Armandii

Category: Our Clematis

An evergreen species from China found over a large geographical area, introduced in England in 1990 by Ernest Wilson. A very rampant climber with large pointed dark green leaves, generally trifoliate. They have a leathery texture when mature and an attractive bronze colour when young. The foliage is prone to damage by wind and late spring frost may kill the new grown, so except in the warmest areas it is best planted on a south or south-west facing aspect against a large wall. The creamy white to pure white flat open flowers are 4-5cm (1 ½ - 2 in) in diameter , have off-white anthers and are produced on short flower stems in clusters from the leaf axil buds. They have a scent like that of hawthorn.
