Guernsey Clematis Nursery

Guernsey Approved Clematis

The following varieties are suitable for the garden.  They are reliable, easy to grow and multi-blooming, usually over a long period.

The Guernsey Clematis Nursery has bred and introduced these varieties over a few years.  They have proved to be a good addition to any garden.

Clair de lune Evirin (N)

An Evison/Poulsen cultivar introduced in 1997 to celebrate the Centenary Year of EMI, the record label company and the song title "Blue Moon", one of their best selling song titles. Raised by Raymond Evison in his Guernsey nursery. A compact free flowering plant, suitable for any position in the garden, the flowers retaining their colour best in a shady situation. An ideal plant for container culture, for the patio or small garden. The flowers measure 15-18cm (6-7in) across and have a base colour of white, which is suffused with pale lilac becoming darker at the edges of the tepals. The tepals have most attractive wavy edges, a stunning feature of the flower. The slightly smaller summer flowers are generally darker in colour. The pretty tepal colour is shown to great effect by the contrasting dark red anthers. A very good cut flower clematis. Launched at the 1997 Chelsea Flower Show.

Planting Instructions

Clematis grown in containers are a beautiful way to add height to a patio or courtyard garden. Choose a container 18" (45cm) approx. diameter for a single clematis plant plus support. For larger containers consider planting two or more plants per container. When choosing a container, Terracotta or wood are the best materials.

Alternatively, choose a host plant and dig a hole about 18 inches (45cm) deep.

  1.  Bury the clematis root crown 2.5" (5cm) below soil surface.
  2. Loosen out the clematis roots prior to planting.
  3. Use loam based compost such as John Innes No. 3 or well-rotted garden compost.
  4. To aid drainage provide a layer of small stones or pea gravel at the bottom of the hole/container.
  5. Finally, plant low growing plants at the base of the clematis to provide shade for the roots.
