Guernsey Clematis Nursery

Guernsey Approved Clematis

The following varieties are suitable for the garden.  They are reliable, easy to grow and multi-blooming, usually over a long period.

The Guernsey Clematis Nursery has bred and introduced these varieties over a few years.  They have proved to be a good addition to any garden.

Shimmer™ Evipo028 (N)

Large 7” (18cm) diameter flowers, opening deep lilac blue, with a paler central bar to each sepal, fading to mid-blue and maturing to light to mid blue, giving a contrasting range of flower colours across the different aged flowers.  Red anthers, fading to a deep mauve.  Slightly smaller flowers as the season progresses.  Amazing with purple or grey foliage shrubs and red or pink roses.

This clematis will grow to 6-8 ft. (180-250cm), starting to flower at about 2ft (60cm) to 3ft (90cm).  It is ideal to grow and flower on walls, pergolas, archways or on tripods, ideally with associated plants such as summer-flowering roses or through wall-trained evergreen or deciduous shrubs and climbers, through free-standing shrubs or for giving added colour on metal, hazel or willow tripods or wigwams, in mixed borders giving added height and interest.

Its multi-flowering habit is unique for a summer flowering, large-flowered clematis, as its blooms are produced in great abundance.  Many blooms change colour as they mature, giving an appearance of a multi-coloured flowering clematis, an added interest.

Flowering early summer to late summer
Zone 4-9
Height 1.8m - 2.5m (6-8ft)
Pruning end of winter/very early spring when all stems should be removed to 12” (30cm) above soil level

Planting Instructions

Clematis grown in containers are a beautiful way to add height to a patio or courtyard garden. Choose a container 18" (45cm) approx. diameter for a single clematis plant plus support. For larger containers consider planting two or more plants per container. When choosing a container, Terracotta or wood are the best materials.

Alternatively, choose a host plant and dig a hole about 18 inches (45cm) deep.

  1.  Bury the clematis root crown 2.5" (5cm) below soil surface.
  2. Loosen out the clematis roots prior to planting.
  3. Use loam based compost such as John Innes No. 3 or well-rotted garden compost.
  4. To aid drainage provide a layer of small stones or pea gravel at the bottom of the hole/container.
  5. Finally, plant low growing plants at the base of the clematis to provide shade for the roots.
